**I received an advanced copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review***

If you’ve read any of my previous reviews or are a member of the Faith and Friends Book Club for Christian women, you know that I’m a fan of historical fiction, preferably Christian.  Hidden Among the Stars is historical fiction, but written in a split setting format (called time-slip fiction):  half takes place just before and at the start of World War II and half in current times.

Wow. The writing in Hidden Among the Stars blew me away.  Elegant prose, vivid descriptions and multi-faceted characters brought this story to life.

I loved how the story connected rich characters from Austria in WWII with characters set in modern day.  There were twists and turns and several times, I gasped out loud when the plot line took me to unexpected places.

With elegant prose and grace, Melanie Dobson interwines the past and present together in a beautiful story of love, hatred and what it really means to lay down your life for a friend. Staying true to the horror and yet, hope of Austria during the Nazi regime, Hidden Among the Stars paints a vivid picture of what Austrians, both Jew and Aryan, faced during this blight in our history.

The characters, both present day and historical are developed and described in so many layers that you feel you know them and can both cheer and cry for them.

The Christian faith and God’s plan is woven throughout Hidden Among the Stars in a masterful way. It makes sense without being preachy.

This masterfully written book has taken a place in my all-time favorites list.  I’m excited to read more from this author. Hidden Among the Stars will be recommended by me for a long time.

Here’s what the publisher has to say about the book:

From the award-winning author of Catching the Wind, which Publishers Weekly called “unforgettable” and a “must-read,” comes another gripping time-slip novel about hidden treasure, a castle, and ordinary people who resisted evil in their own extraordinary way.

The year is 1938, and as Hitler’s troops sweep into Vienna, Austrian Max Dornbach promises to help his Jewish friends hide their most valuable possessions from the Nazis, smuggling them to his family’s summer estate near the picturesque village of Hallstatt. He enlists the help of Annika Knopf, his childhood friend and the caretaker’s daughter, who is eager to help the man she’s loved her entire life. But when Max also brings Luzia Weiss, a young Jewish woman, to hide at the castle, it complicates Annika’s feelings and puts their entire plan―even their very lives―in jeopardy. Especially when the Nazis come to scour the estate and find both Luzia and the treasure gone.

Eighty years later, Callie Randall is mostly content with her quiet life, running a bookstore with her sister and reaching out into the world through her blog. Then she finds a cryptic list in an old edition of Bambi that connects her to Annika’s story . . . and maybe to the long-buried story of a dear friend. As she digs into the past, Callie must risk venturing outside the safe world she’s built for a chance at answers, adventure, and maybe even new love.
