1. Tell us a bit about you, your business and your ministry:
I have always loved dressing up. As young as I was in Kindergarten, I was sleeping in foam hair curlers and wearing lace socks and fun dresses to school. As I grew, so did my style. In sophomore year of high school, I began wearing heels every day, experimenting with makeup, and learning how to put together outfits as I developed my own style. I began sharing my style journey on Instagram, and have been able to grow a close knit community of people who are there to follow along. Now in college, I still am not sure how to define my style because it changes every now and then, but the one thing that is constant is God’s presence in my life. As my platform continues to grow, I give all the glory to Christ and love to share my walk with Him with my followers.
Would you share a bit of your testimony with our audience?
I grew up in a Christian home, but made the decision to make that commitment myself when I was in 9th grade. I had extreme insecurities that I didn’t tell many people about, and thankfully the Lord brought me out of that place and has blessed me beyond my wildest dreams! College has proven to be very challenging, both academically and personally, but Jesus has never failed me. He has given me the most amazing opportunities and I can’t wait to see what else He has planned for my life as I continue to try to truly be a vessel for the Holy Spirit to work through so that I can be His hands and feet wherever He takes me.
How do you mesh your faith and your business/career?
None of my success is possible without His hands in it. I don’t talk about Jesus in every post, but I try to make my platform a reflection of my real life. I don’t talk about Jesus in every single conversation, every single day, but I do try to live my life in a Christ like way so that I’m walking the walk, not just talking the talk. That is how my blog and Instagram is set up as well. I give all glory to Him, and make decisions based on what will keep Him at the center.
If you could give one tip or piece of advice for our audience about how to live their faith through their career or business, what would it be?
Surround yourself with people whose values and goals align with your own! Support systems are important, and being to grow with people who are doing similar things is so fun. There are tons of amazing Facebook groups out there, so take a look and see what you can find.
How did you start your business?
As I began to share more of my style on Instagram, I found that people were quickly drawn to my platform. I began working with student photographers at my university, which was how I got high quality photos. From there it just started growing exponentially. It has certainly slowed down since then, but now I’m focused on continuing to engage more of my followers with me to create more of a community.
How can women still look fashionable yet, maintain modesty?
I know this is such a cliché one, but I love high necklines. All of my dresses come to my neck and I can’t get enough of it! I also make sure my dresses come up no farther than a few inches up my leg. I’ve learned that it’s also really important to carry yourself in a respectful manner, because that impacts how modest an outfit can look too. For example, if I wore a bit of a tighter dress with stilettos, I would want to be sure to still “be me” and have my fun personality, but just be conscious of how it could come across if I weren’t paying attention to how I was moving my body and such.
I see that you are from NC but have a passion to move to NYC. Why is this an important move for you and what has God told you about it?
Freshman year of college, I knew I wanted to move to either LA or NYC. One morning, I woke up and felt like the Holy Spirit answered my question, and I literally was like, “I’m moving to New York!”, and it was as simple as that. Since then, I’ve worked extremely hard in my extracurricular activities, and have had the blessing of completing 4 amazing internships, with my most recent one in Manhattan. God has been so faithful.
Sadly, so many young people turn their backs on God and church once they graduate HS. How have you kept your faith strong despite the pressures of the millennial generation to live life all about them instead of God?
It certainly feels different to maintain your relationship with Christ when your parents aren’t there to “gently force” you into going to church. I honestly didn’t go to church my freshman year, but I was being conscious about who I surrounded myself with. My sophomore year, I joined Sigma Alpha Omega, the Christian sorority, and that has been so important to me. Making sure that Christ is at the center of each step that I take has kept me accountable on a daily basis.
What is your favorite Bible verse or book of the Bible and why?
Romans 8:38-39. Even when we feel so far away from Him, He loves us in our best and worst moments, and absolutely nothing we could ever dream of could get between that.
What’s next for you?
Great question! Still figuring some of that out. I plan on continuing my commitment to cultivating an authentic and engaged community on Instagram, and making sure my blog aligns with my values. I want to create content such as downloadable e-courses and e-books so that I can monetize my blog in that way, but the challenge is finding something that is still authentic to me + my audience, without going off track. Would love any ideas and suggestions for things like that from anyone reading this!
