Deuteronomy 5:14 tells us that we are to rest on the sabbath:
“but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do.” – Deuteronomy 5:14
Scripture also tells us that rest is important at other times, too. But, let’s be honest for a moment here. How often do you rest? I mean really rest your body, soul and mind so that you can be refreshed?
Life in our society is all about busyness. We rush from meeting to meeting, kids play date to kids sports practice an from ministry obligation to food shopping. We go, go, go and rarely find (or make) the time to rest and rejuvenate. This frenetic pace causes stress, anxiety, health and relationship problems and other signs of a burned-out life.
Robert Morris, in his new book, Take the Day Off, shares about the importance of rest and how the Bible has the cure for this epidemic of a too fast paced life.
About Take The Day Off by Robert Morris
Robert Morris, the author of Take The Day Off, is a well-known and respected pastor and author who has written best sellers including Beyond Blessed and Truly Free. In his latest book, he tackles an epidemic that is plaguing our society: busyness.
If we are stressed, how can we have the capacity to pour into others?
The book shares scripture about the importance of rest and points to practical ways you can incorporate rest into your life. I loved that he connects rest with eternal benefits.
Take the Day Off, for me, was the kick in the pants I needed to make rest a priority in my life, not just for my health but for my role in advancing the Kingdom of God.
