Please note that while this is an unbiased review of the book The Heart’s Appeal by Jennifer Delamere, Baker Publishing Group has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.
Recently, I had the opportunity to receive an advance copy of The Heart’s Appeal by Jennifer Delamere. As a fan of historical fiction as well as Christian fiction, I was intrigued by the blending of the two. Ms. Delamere is not new to this genre and has previously written in Victorian romance category with her debut book An Heiress at Heart which was a 2013 RITA Award finalist in the inspirational category.
In The Heart’s Appeal, the characters are complex and dynamic and each in their own way, charming. The heroine, Julia Bernay, is an orphan seeking to enter the medical field as a doctor, a new option for women in London during the late 1800s. She is driven and has dreams of using her medical degree to minister to the citizens of Africa for a life of missions.
During an unfortunate, but ultimately fortuitous event, on her way to a medical lecture, she helps to save a man’s life. Michael Stephenson, an up and coming young barrister, stays on her mind. A visit to check on his well-being turns into private tutoring in Latin to help her prepare for her medical school entrance exam. After all, he is indebted to her.
Through an unlikely connection and not more than a few twists and turns, the two of them become more entertwined and sadly on the opposite side of the largest case in Michael’s burgeoning career.
Rich with backstories about the merchant shipping industry as well as medicine, law and high society in the late 19th century London, Ms. Delamere weaves Christian principles and romance into a beautiful story. Although admittedly, it took me a few chapters to settle into the book, once I was settled in, I couldn’t put it down.
